Matteo Vianello is a PhD, author, educator and researcher in landscape architecture from Università Iuav di Venezia. He has taught as an adjunct professor at Università di Genova and Venezia. His research explores alternative design approaches through ecology and landscape theory, investigating the aesthetics, programmes, and processes of post-capitalist territories.

Ocean as Ground. An Offshore Theory on Urbanisation

Today, the ocean is a global arena where architecture, ecology, infrastructure, and politics intersect—yet its spatial dynamics remain largely uncharted. A persistent narrative that portrays the ocean as an uninhabited space. The exponential growth of commercial trade and the expanding network of infrastructures above and below the water’s surface have long challenged this view, prompting researchers to conceptualize oceans as urbanised environments. Unveiling forgotten histories, projects, and narratives, The Ocean as Ground explores the continuous displacement and replication of spaces between land and sea, in the time of planetary urbanisation. If urbanization now extends across the entire planet, how to read the oceans as urban spaces as well? How to understand land urbanisation from the oceans? Through the conceptual lens of “ground”, the book invites readers to rethink how we perceive, design, and inhabit the spaces of both land and sea.
